Universities Honour PC’s Graduates

Paraparaumu College’s 2017 Year 13s ended a remarkable year by amassing $194,800 worth of under-graduate scholarships from New Zealand’s universities.  Martha Piercy gained the most lucrative award winning the University of Otago – Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship worth $40,000 with Tessa Thomson winning Victoria University of Wellington’s Vice-Chancellor’s Achiever Māori Scholarship.

Assistant Principal, Helen Benson, who has worked with Year 13 this year, attributed this success to the great culture of leadership and achievement which she says has been a feature of this group of students “in the classroom, in extra-curricular activities and in the service of others in the school and the community”.  She also acknowledged the staff who had supported them throughout the year including writing references in support of these applications.  “We have worked hard at building connections and strong professional relationships with all of our students and their families” she said, “this really helps when teachers and our Careers team are writing references to support students’ scholarship applications.  This year, they have had a lot to write about!”
