Kia ora koutou

The mid winter mornings may be crisp and bright but I would like to start our first newsletter of Term 3 with a very warm welcome back! I hope the term break gave some time for students to recharge their batteries and get ready for what is a very busy term ahead.

There is certainly lots to look forward to and some key dates and events are highlighted elsewhere in this newsletter. Of particular note is our Conferencing Day and Careers Expo which takes place on Wednesday 31 July. We look forward to seeing you at these conferencing interviews and I would also encourage you to get along to the expo at Southwards Car Museum. You will find an extensive list of exhibitors in the article below  - please note that the expo finishes at 2:30pm.

We also continue with our Winter Sports programme and it is great to see all our teams competing and doing well. In addition to regular competition our Football and Hockey teams are heading up to Feilding High School on Tuesday 30 July for their annual sports exchange. We wish them all the best for this!

It may seem a long way off as we end week 1 but I want to signal now that we have Derived Grade exams taking place between Thursday 12th and Thursday 19th September. Most students in Years 11, 12 and 13 will be involved in taking exams during this period so it is vital that preparation starts now. We also have Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite exams for a number of students in Years 10-13 during the same period. There is, therefore, a real need to ensure that all students are fully focused on the core business of learning and academic achievement as we progress through this term.

I also want to signal that when we talk about academic achievement, it is clear that regular school attendance makes a huge difference. Every day counts and some students might think that missing one day each week doesn’t matter too much but, over time, the loss of learning is significant. One day per week equates to 10 days per term, which means they will have missed 2 weeks from school in that term. Over the course of a year this adds up to 8 weeks! Any students who are missing in action for this amount of time are going to find it very difficult to keep up and produce their very best work. Our Tuhono teachers, Deans and Senior Leaders are committed to working with parents and caregivers to ensure that our students are at school and in class all day every day. I would like to thank you for your support in ensuring full school attendance remains a priority and I would encourage you to please get in touch with the relevant year level Deans if you need any help with this. We will be ensuring regular attendance is an absolute priority as we move through Term 3, and with this in mind there will be further comments and updates in upcoming newsletters.

ENROL NOW FOR 2025!

All applications for out of zone enrolments in Year 9 closed on Wednesday this week.  We do need to go to ballot as we received a large number of enrolments.  This will occur on Monday 29 July, with families being advised of the outcome by Thursday 1 August.

If you have a student intending to commence next year that lives within our zone, and you have yet to enrol, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to help us with our planning for classes next year.  All the information can be found in the news article below.

UPCOMING DATES

You-niform day: Friday 2 August

We will be holding a You-niform day on Friday 2 August for all students. We would encourage everyone to bring in a gold coin donation on the day, with all funds going towards Student Council projects.

Advance Notification Upcoming School Interviews

Interviews for all levels are being held on Thursday 15 August (face-to-face at college) and Thursday 22 August (virtually).

As a result, school will conclude at 2:15pm on both days.

Further information will be available on our website and emailed to you separately at the beginning of August.

Car Wash!

We have a car wash this Saturday from 9am to 1pm - $5 per car, raising funds to help our 1st XI Boys Hockey team for tournament week. We appreciate your support.

A reminder that we use our School App and Facebook page for any urgent messages and to highlight student success and we would love you to follow us.  You can find the links at the bottom of this newsletter along with a link to our Instagram page and Youtube.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

On Sunday 28 July at 12 noon the Paekākāriki Surf Lifeguards will be hosting a surf safety workshop on Paekākāriki Beach. This is for all ages and abilities. They  will do some education followed by a swim and practical skills lesson. With more people than ever taking to the water in winter when the flags aren't up, they want to equip people with the skills to keep themselves safe at the beach.

There will be a bonfire and fish n chip truck afterwards to warm everyone up.

You don't have to get wet! They will do some instruction on the beach, identifying rips and currents etc.
