School-based Social Worker Vacancy

Paraparaumu College is a proudly co-educational school of around 1,400 students situated on the beautiful Kāpiti Coast. We enjoy a spacious campus with a growing roll, an innovative approach to learning, and a commitment to achieving the highest equitable outcomes for our students.

We are currently seeking a Registered Social Worker to work alongside the student support services team to support students, family/whanau and work in relationship with local community support services. This is a permanent part-time position of 24 hours per week.


The key duties and areas of responsibility for this position will include:

  • establishing and maintaining the profile of the social work service within the school and the wider community 

  • being an active participant in the daily operations of the student support services team

  • providing social work support for students within the context of their family, to promote positive social health, wellbeing and safety

  • supporting young people's educational development in collaboration with their family and college staff  

  • identifying, developing and coordinating group programmes that would benefit students

  • contributing to the outcomes and future development of the social work service at the college.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified and experienced Social Worker with registration and a current practising certificate (or eligible for registration) and having a proven track record of successfully providing a wide range of support services, ideally in a school environment and as part of a multidisciplinary team. They will have proven ability to work in a bicultural / multicultural environment and demonstrate understanding of adolescent development and social issues affecting young people, and how to respond to a range of issues that young people may present with e.g. mental health, abuse, neglect and family violence. They will have experience in facilitating professional, restorative and family/whanau meetings and intervention programmes for young people. 

Computer literacy, a working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 and excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

The candidate must be a New Zealand resident or have a valid work visa.
