SCHOOL HAKA

Our school haka was written by Ben Ngaia and is called Ko Taku Kāreti. There is a short version which all students learn, plus a longer version.

If you want to learn the haka, here’s a video of our haka with the lyrics.  We have included both the wāhine and tāne actions.  The actions are mirrored making the haka easier to learn.

Year 9 and 10 students learn the haka each year and participate in an inter-house haka contest.

There are several videos of the inter-house haka contest on youtube:

Te Reo (Long Version)

Kaea: Taringa whakarongo!  Kia mau!

Katoa: Hi!

Kaea: Moe ara rā!  Moe ara rā! Takahia kia kino!

Katoa: E kino nei hoki!

Kaea: Ko whea ngā pae maunga e karanga nei?

Katoa: Ko Tararua!  Ko Tararua!

Kaea: Ko wai te kāreti e tū nei?

Katoa: Ko taku kāreti! Ko taku kāreti!

I-a-ha-ha!

Tōku maunga tiketike

Huinga mauri ora

Ko Paraparaumu e ngunguru nei

Āna te ihi!  Āna te wehi!

Āna te mana nō ōku tīpuna e

Kaea: Kia kaha rā!

Katoa: Auē hī!

Kaea: Kia kaha rā!

Katoa: Auē hī!

Tēnei taku toa – Tāwhirimātea

Tēnei taku toa – Tū-te-Nganahau

Riakina taku mana Riakina taku mana

Ki te tahatū o te rangi

Ki te okiokinga e tāria ana au

Ka tahi – ka rua – auē hī!

English Translation (Short Version)

Leader:  Be alert!  Be alert!

All: Hi

Leader: Awaken yourself from your slumber! Be watchful and alert at all times! Stomp your feet with anger!

All: Alas, I am consumed with rage

Leader:  Where are the mountain ranges that call to me?

All: It is Tararua! It is Tararua!

Leader:  What is the college that stands before me?

All:  It is my college! It is my college!

Behold

My mountain’s loftiness

Symbolises our collective force

It is Paraparaumu that rumbles forth

Indeed it is elevating! Indeed it is awe inspiring!

Indeed it is the pride that descends from my ancestors

One and all. United as one.

SCHOOL WAIATA

Ki Kāpiti is our school waiata.  We have the lyrics in te Reo Māori and their English translation.

You can listen to a version of it sung by Keelan Ransfield here.

Te Reo Translation

Whakarongo mai ki ngā manu e rere

I te wao nui a Tāne

Ki Kāpiti

Pupuhi mai ana he hau moana

Nā Tama-nui i whātoro

Iho ai

English Translation

Listen to the birds that are flying

From the great wilderness of Tāne

To Kāpiti

Let the breeze blow in from the sea

The sun stretch down on us

Out to us
